Historical Note

E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly known as the DuPont Company. It was established in 1802 and began by manufacturing gunpowder, later moving into chemical compounds. DuPont's Advertising Department was formed in September 1921, when the company was reorganized with a decentralized structure. Before that time, advertising had been a division within the Sales Department. Still, when the sales function was decentralized, a central Advertising Department became necessary to coordinate advertising activities across product lines. The Advertising Division was established as its own department in 1921 to address this need.

On January 1, 1980, the Advertising Department was renamed the Marketing Communications Department. The 1986 creation of the External Affairs Department was due to the merger of the Marketing Communications Department and the Public Affairs Department.

The Advertising Department was responsible for assisting the company in promoting and advertising the work of the other departments, including the Textile Fibers Department. The Textile Fibers Department of the DuPont Company was established in 1936 as the Rayon Department, which specialized in researching and developing synthetic fibers for fabrics.

Over time, it began to develop and produce a more comprehensive array of synthetic textile fibers, and in 1952 it was renamed the Textile Fibers Department to reflect the company's expanded product line, which included fibers like Nylon, Orlon, Dacron, and Lycra. The department was renamed again in 1988 to the Fibers Department to reflect the company's expansion into synthetic fibers production for non-textile purposes.

Scope and Content

This photograph album highlights the facilities and processes of the DuPont Company's synthetic textile fibers manufacturing and research. The album was created between 1945 and 1968 and was intended to assist the company in promoting and advertising the work of the Rayon Department and, later, the Textile Fibers Department. It was last owned within the DuPont Company by the External Affairs Department, which was responsible for advertising and publicity. The External Affairs Department was created on January 1, 1986, meaning that the album was likely created by one of the department's predecessor agencies, probably the Advertising Department.

The photographs in the album are undated but date from around 1946 to 1968. Each photograph is accompanied by text describing the image. The album is divided into seven sections: Nylon, Orlon, Dacron, Acetate, Lycra, Chestnut Run, and All Fibers.

The Nylon section contains twenty-six photographs of plant exteriors and interiors, employees at work, product testing, product development and research, and magnified views of Nylon fibers. It includes photographs taken at DuPont's Seaford Nylon Plant, Martinsville Plant, Spruance Plant, Chattanooga Nylon Plant, and Experimental Station.

The Orlon section contains five photographs showing plant exteriors of the company's May Plant in Camden, South Carolina.

The Dacron section contains nineteen photographs showing plant exteriors and interiors, employees at work, product testing, and magnified views of Dacron fibers. This section also includes a page of photographs and descriptions about Nylon; numbers printed underneath photographs indicate that the pages are in the accurate original order, despite this section being thematically out of order. Facilities depicted include DuPont's Kinston Plant, Old Hickory Plant, and Seaford Nylon Plant.

The Acetate section contains twelve photographs of plant exteriors, interiors, and employees at work at the company's Waynesboro Plant.

The Lycra section contains nine photographs of plant exterior and interiors, employees at work, and product testing at the company's Waynesboro Plant.

The Chestnut Run section contains seventeen photographs of exterior and interior views of the company's Chestnut Run Textile Research Laboratory and images of employees at work there.

The All Fibers section contains fifteen photographs of unspecified or varied synthetic fiber products. It includes images of plant exteriors and interiors, employees at work, product testing, production processes, and magnified views of man-made fibers. The facilities depicted include the Experimental Station, Old Hickory Plant, and Spruance Plant.
