Historical Note

The Coca-Cola Company is a multinational corporation in the beverage industry, best known for its soft drink Coca-Cola, which was formulated in 1886 by Dr. John Stith Pemberton (1831-1888) as a medicinal syrup for headaches. Asa G. Candler (1851-1929) purchased the formula from Pemberton in 1888 and incorporated the Coca-Cola Company in 1892. The company has since evolved to produce a wide variety of beverages and associated products. Coca-Cola established a unique distribution system that allowed independent bottling companies to buy the soft drink, then bottle and distribute it.

Coca-Cola remains one of the largest beverage manufacturers in the United States, with more than 2,800 products available in more than 200 countries.

Scope and Contents

This small collection consists of a sales catalog and price list showing retailers' options for Coca-Cola point-of-sale advertisements that would encourage customers to purchase additional items before exiting the store, stored in a binder. The binder was updated periodically between 1958 and 1960. The catalog promotes a selection of Coca-Cola marketing products divided into the following eight sections: Inserts & Frames (for lithographed inserts/posters, includes advertisements targeting black customers); General Lithography (for displays, window streamers, motion displays, safety inserts, shopping carts, floor bins, shelves, banners, etc.); Restaurants & Eating Places (for menu riders, menu holders, food cards, food card holders, and menu boards); Semi-Permanent Material (for illuminated halo signs, giant glass bottles, non-illuminated signs, cube display, etc.); Pre-Mix (for decals, signs, cards, etc.); New Package Material (for King Size, Family Size); Carton Racks (for hand truck display, mobile display, spring-a-way, service station display, etc.); and Special Promotions (for anniversary sale, indoor picnic, Junior Miss Fashion Doll, King Size Coke, Hi-Fi Club, etc.). Each section contains a price index.

The binder had many items laid-in the inside front cover. These items have been removed and placed inside six folders for preservation purposes. These materials are: memorandum and correspondence, blank order forms, advertisements and ephemera, dental data and carbonated beverages brochures, store display poster insert instructions and examples, Junior Miss Fashion Doll advertisements, and Santa Claus Doll advertisements. There are items laid in that date from 1957 through 1960.
