Scope and Contents
This small collection of photographs shows various views of the Century of Progress International Exposition, also known as the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The images are snapshots of buildings, exhibits, and amusements taken by an unknown photographer throughout the fairgrounds. The collection provides insight into what the experience of an average fairgoer was like.
There is a typed inventory for the first seventy out of 160 photographs; however, it is unclear who numbered the photographs and created the inventory. It is incorrectly dated, and some images are numbered out of sequence. The collection has been arranged alphabetically by attraction name. Images of attractions are grouped together, regardless of whether or not the fairgoers visited them on separate days. Original offensive names have been retained and placed in quotation marks.
The snapshots appear to have been taken during the summer of 1934, over the course of at least two, possibly three days attending the fair. The images can be dated to the summer of 1934 because performer Sally Rand is featured to be headlining at the Italian Village, which occurred beginning on July 2, 1934. The previous summer, she performed her famous fan dance and Lady Godiva's Ride on the White Horse through the Streets of Paris at the fair. The second indication that these images are from 1934 is the Neptune's Follies Theatre, a burlesque show that only opened in the fair's second year.
According to the typed inventory, a man identified as "The Amateur" appears in two images. The same man appears in at least two additional photographs. He wears different suits, indicating that he and the photographer visited on multiple days.
The photographs show people walking through the fair, building exteriors, and views of various attractions. There are several aerial views of the fairgrounds taken from the Sky Ride, both during the day and at night. There are also some images taken during the nighttime light show and fireworks.
