Historical Note

Lepley & Joswick Photographers was a commercial photographic studio in Chicago, Illinois, between 1946 and 1952. The firm was a partnership between Alden D. Lepley (1911-2003) and Gerald "Jerry" J. Joswick (1923-1990).

Lepley was born in Burnham, Pennsylvania, just outside Lewistown, to Eva Deamer Lepley (1887-1972) and Homer Lepley (1884-1968). His first sales job was selling salve door-to-door at the age of nine, which allowed him to buy his first Kodak camera. Thus began his lifelong love of photography, sales, and travel.

After graduation from Lewistown High School in 1929, Lepley joined the staff of Steven A. Haboush (1892-1975), lecturer, author, and world traveler, for the presentation of the Holy Land. Lepley remained with Professor Haboush, giving travelogue lectures throughout the eastern and midwestern United States and Canada until 1940. During these travels, somewhere near Chicago, he met his future wife, Rosemary Adele Weis (1918-1999). The couple married in 1939 and had three sons. Lepley began a commercial photography business in 1940 at 5121 W. Devon Ave. in Chicago.

Jerry Joswick was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Theresa Grain Joswick (1889-1960) and Joseph F. Joswick (1887-1971). He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and served until being honorably discharged in 1945. Joswick was an Air Force combatant photographer and sergeant at nineteen. In 1943, he was a member of the Ninth Bomber Command Camera Unit attached to the 98th Bomb Group; of the thirty-two men in the unit, he was the only one to survive. Joswick received a Distinguished Flying Cross. In between missions, he worked as a motion picture cameraman, photographer, and lecturer in Chicago and California.

In 1946, Joswick joined Lepley at the Devon studio. Their clients were mainly industrial ones. Both continued to pursue side projects and give lectures separately.

In 1951, Joswick married Frances Chambers (1929-2022) in Eastchester, New York, although they met and resided in Chicago (Oak Park). The couple had two daughters and a son.

By 1953, the Lepley family had moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Alden Lepley entered the music and electronics industry. Jerry J. Joswick authored Combat Camera Man, a book published in 1961. The Joswicks moved to Oceanside, California, in 1975 and later Hawaii, where Joswick died.
