Abstract

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of American Independence. Held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, it was the first major U.S. world's fair. The collection consists of color-printed cards with views of the exhibition. Included are five views of the major buildings, thirteen state buildings (including Delaware), three international buildings, and one fountain.

Historical Note

The Centennial Exhibition of 1876 celebrated the one-hundredth anniversary of American Independence. It was held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia and was the first major U.S. world's fair. The fairgrounds were made up of several main buildings, as well as some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures, including twenty-four state buildings, each designed in a regional style.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of color-printed cards with views of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. Included are five views of the major buildings, thirteen state buildings (including Delaware), three international buildings, and one fountain. The titles are as follows: U. S. Exhibition Building, Agricultural Building, Horticultural Hall, Art Gallery, Womens' Pavilion, Arkansa (sic) State Building, Colorado and Kansas State Building, Connecticut State Building, Delaware State Building, Ill State Building, Indiana State Building, Massachusett (sic) State Building, Michigan State Building, New Hampshire State Building, New Jersey State Building, New York Tate (sic) Building, Pennsylvania State Building, Ohio State Building, English Government Building, German Government Building, The Spanish Building, and The T. A. B. Fountain.
