Biographical Note
Augustus Smith (1868-1932) was a civil engineer and contractor. He held several patents for coaling machinery, such as hoists.
Smith graduated from City College of New York in 1887 and Columbia College of Mines in 1889. From 1893 to 1906, he worked as a contractor in New York for Augustus Smith & Co. building coal stations, freight terminals, and piers. In 1906, he founded Bergen Point Iron Works in Bayonne, New Jersey. The Bergen Point Iron Works manufactured steel structures and highway safety devices. The company began business in February 1907; its first job was a small extension to the Narragansett Bay Coal Depot. The firm went on to construct naval coaling stations at Cristobal and Balboa on the Panama Canal. Smith was president at Bergen Point until his death in 1932.
William Henry Allen Austin (1885-1940) was president and director of Bergen Point Iron Works from 1932 until his death. Austin was succeeded by Smith's son, Henry S. Smith (1913-1973), who majored in chemistry at Princeton University, graduating in 1936. He began as a salesman for the Bergen Point Iron Works, working his way up to president and director.
Scope and Contents
These photographs show construction progress and completed buildings, bridges, and coaling stations. There are images of projects Smith worked on or contributed to, either as a contractor or an engineer. The materials are arranged by company name: Augustus Smith & Co., Bergen Point Iron Works, and Groton Bridge and Manufacturing Co. While the association between Smith and Groton Bridge is uncertain, it is probable that Smith was involved in the construction or in supplying the steel used to create the arches used in the two bridge structures prior to being completed by the Groton Bridge and Manufacturing Company. Included are several U.S. coaling stations constructed by Smith in the early 1900s and coaling stations and equipment used for Cristobal Coaling Plant in the Panama Canal in 1914 and 1915.
