Historical Note
Dan Dee Pretzel and Potato Chip Company was an American snack food manufacturer based in Cleveland, Ohio. Originally named West Penn Pretzel Co., Dan Dee started in 1913 as a small operation outside of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Friends Harry Albert Orr (1894-1970) and Charles V. Pike (1892-1952) founded the company together, hand-making batches of pretzels and personally delivering their product to local retail outlets. This strategy proved successful, and the company grew rapidly. By the late 1920s, operations were moved to Cleveland, potato chips were added to the product list, and the name was changed to Dan Dee Pretzel and Potato Chip Company.
Over the years, Dan Dee Pretzel and Potato Chip Company became a leading snack food manufacturer in Ohio. As the business expanded, Orr and Pike purchased several plants around the state, and both merged with and acquired other processed food manufacturers, including Berg's Pretzels and Blue Star Potato Chip Company. By the 1980s, the company had 130 sales routes and was reporting millions in revenue each year.
In 2018, no longer able to compete with larger national firms, Dan Dee Pretzel and Potato Chip Company closed after 105 years.
