Biographical Note

Eugene Blery (1805-1887) was a French artist, engraver and lithographer. He printed all of his own artwork which focused on landscapes. The Montalivet family supported Blery. He was recognized and honored during his lifetime for his artwork. He also was mentor to the great artist Charles Meyron (1821-1868).

Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) was an economist, diplomat, and enterepreneur and the patriarch of the family who established the DuPont Company. Oringinally from Paris, he lived in Nemours with his wife and two sons. Pierre Samuel du Pont was a member of parliament for Nemours. During the French Revolution he supported King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and after enduring many hardships, du Pont de Nemours emigrated to the United States with his family in 1799. In 1802 his son, Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834), established a black powder manufactory in Delaware.
