Historical Note

Falls Manufacturing Company manufactured fire-door hardware. The company was founded by John C. Kortick (1870-1933), who served as general manager and president. Falls Manufacturing Company's product line included post caps, bases, and joist hangers. The factory building, machine shop, warehouse, and showroom were located at 317 1st Street, San Francisco, California. The firm employed agents in Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Sacramento, Fresno, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Vancouver, British Columbia.

In 1913, the company name changed to Kortick-Falls Manufacturing Company. In 1918, the business reorganized as the Kortick Manufacturing Company, specializing in iron and steel. Scope and Contents

This presentation album showcases the fireproofing protection provided by the San Francisco-based Falls Manufacturing Company in the years following the disastrous 1906 earthquake. The photographs include exterior views of buildings in which Falls fire-doors and other equipment were installed, such as the Valencia Theatre and the Postal Telegraph Building; interior shots highlighting fire-safe construction methods; and heavy-duty doors. In some cases these images depict buildings after they had endured a fire. Also shown are photographs of other Falls steel products, such as industrial shelving units and steel frames. There are typed captions describing buildings and their designers; the type of work done by the Falls Company is present on page versos.
