Abstract

Baldwin Locomotive Works was a manufacturer of railroad locomotives from 1825 until 1972. The company was originally located in Philadelphia and then later moved to Eddystone, Pennsylvania. This album contains twenty two photographs of Baldwin Locomotive Works train engines, train cars, and parts. The album appears to have been created by company President S.M. Vauclain for the Trades Exhibit at the Constitutional Centennial Celebration.

Biographical Note

Samuel Vauclain (1856-1940) was an engineer, inventor, and was president of Baldwin Locomotive Works from 1919 to 1929. Vauclain invented the type of compound steam locomotive that bears his name and which enjoyed a brief popularity as a Baldwin product in the decade after its invention in 1889. Vauclain's father was a shop foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad at Altoona, where Samuel Vauclain grew up and served his apprenticeship.

Baldwin Locomotive Works was a manufacturer of railroad locomotives from 1825 until 1972. The company was originally located in Philadelphia and then later moved to Eddystone, Pennsylvania. Matthias W. Baldwin (1795-1866) founded the Baldwin Locomotive Works, which began as a small machine shop and grew into one of the largest manufacturers of steam locomotives in the United States in the nineteenth century.

Scope and Content

This album contains twenty two photographs of Baldwin Locomotive Works train engines, train cars, and parts. The album appears to have been created by S.M. Vauclain for the Trades Exhibit at the Constitutional Centennial Celebration. Images include the 8780th Locomotive, Lula car, E. DE. F. Dom Pedro II car, wheels, and carriages displaying Baldwin parts pulled by horses in a parade.
