Abstract

Christian Schussele (1824-1879) was an artist and teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. John Sartain (1808-1897) was a Philadelphia printmaker and engraver, and director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The engraving is a group portrait of nineteen nineteenth-century American inventors and industrialists, collected around a table with examples of their inventions, and beneath a portrait of Benjamin Franklin.

Biographical Note

Christian Schussele (1824-1879) was an artist and teacher. Schussele immigrated to the United States from Alsace in 1848, he quickly became a highly esteemed painter in the Philadelphia area. In 1863 he began to suffer from palsey in his right hand and almost gave up on his painting career. Schussele left the United States in 1865 to seek a cure in Europe until John Sartain convinced him to return in 1868 and become an art instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he worked until his death in 1879.

John Sartain (1808-1897) was a Philadelphia printmaker and engraver. Born in London, Sartain immigrated to the United States in 1830 and established his shop. For twenty-three years he was director of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and served as art director of the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.

Scope and Content

The engraving is a group portrait of nineteen nineteenth-century American inventors and industrialists, collected around a table with examples of their inventions, and beneath a portrait of Benjamin Franklin. The inventors include the following men: Wm. T.G. Morton, James Bogardus, Samuel Colt, Cyrus H. McCormick, Joseph Saxton, Peter Cooper, Charles Goodyear, Jordan L. Mott, Joseph Henry, Eliphalet Nott, John Ericsson, Frederick E. Sickels, Samuel F.B. Morse, Henry Burden, Robert Hoe, Erastus B. Bigelow, Isaiah Jennings, Thomas Blanchard, and Elias Howe. Published by Munn & Co., New York and printed by R. Mason, New York.
