Historical Note

William H. Horstmann & Sons was a manufacturer and retailer of silk products for civilian and military clothing between 1815 and 1940.

William H. Horstmann (1785-1850) was a silk weaver who immigrated from Germany and established a workshop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1815. Handloom production slowed significantly after he introduced the Jacquard loom to his shop in 1824. His two sons, William H. Horstmann (1819-1872) and Sigmund H. Horstmann (1821-1870) joined the firm in 1843 renaming the business William H. Horstmann & Sons, and a branch in New York, New York was opened. The silk manufacturer specialized in military trimmings for uniforms and equipment such as swords, drums, and other ornamental goods. There was a second part of the business that dealt with civilian clothing and goods (e.g. coach laces).
