Biographical Note
Lammot du Pont Copeland (1905-1983) was an American businessman and great-great-grandson of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company founder E.I. du Pont (1771-1834). Born in Christiana Hundred, Delaware, Copeland was the only child of Charles Copeland (1867-1944) and Louisa d'Andelot du Pont Copeland (1868-1926). He graduated from Harvard in 1928 with a degree in chemistry and joined the DuPont Company at its Fairfield, Connecticut, plant in 1929. In his fifty-four years with DuPont, Copeland rose from an expediter of small orders to the executive suite, serving as the chief executive officer from 1962 to 1967.
Copeland married Pamela Cunningham (1906-2001) on February 1, 1930, and the couple had three children: Lammot du Pont Copeland, Jr. (1932-), Louisa d'Andelot Copeland (1936-), and Gerret van Sweringen Copeland (1939-). Both Copelands were active in the land conservation movement, cultural institutions (including both the Hagley and Winterthur Museums), and local civic and philanthropic work.
Scope and Contents
This collection primarily consists of portrait photographs of members of the du Pont, Belin, Copeland, Gratiot, La Motte, and related families. Many of these photographs are of children, and frequently, there are several portraits of one person at different ages. In addition, there are family group pictures, wedding pictures, and a few informal snapshots of family members.
The collection also includes photographs of duPont family homes, including Goodstay, Hagley House, and, in particular, Saint Amour and the Philadelphia home of Lammot du Pont (1831-1884) on Powelton Avenue. In general, these photographs are exteriors, but there are a number of interior shots of rooms in the Powelton house. Another item of interest is a photograph of twenty-three Du Pont family members taken in one of the roll mills at Hagley by Life Magazine staff in 1957.
The collection also includes two small booklets. The larger of the two is entitled "Greetings from Louviers 1943," consisting of twelve photographic prints of various du Pont homes. The homes included are the first home of E. I. du Pont on the Brandywine, Dilwyne, Crestlea, Longwood, Eleutherian Mills, Still Pond, Windmar, the Copelands', Gibraltar, Saint Amour, Granogue, and Louviers. The other booklet consists of twelve photographic prints of the home of Seymour Cunningham in Litchfield, Connecticut, dated May 10, 1937.
