Historical Note
The Hercules Powder Co. was one of companies created from the break up of the E.I. du Pont de Nemours "powder trust" in 1911 as ruled by a U.S. Supreme Court decision. In its early years as a separate company, it continued to produce explosives and dynamite and used advertising styles and devices (calendars and advertisments) similar to the Du Pont Company.
The Laflin and Rand Powder Company, one of the largest gunpowder manufacturers in the nineteenth century, was formed from several predecessor companies, including the Laflin Powder Company and the Smith & Rand Powder Company. The entire capital stock of the company was acquired by Du Pont Company interests in October of 1902, and Laflin and Rand merged into Du Pont in 1909.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of a Hercules Powder Company calendar from 1919. It features one color illustration captioned, "Bagged in France," a World War One image featuring a woman in a chair and a hunter holding a German helmet shipped from France. There are two other incomplete Hercules Company calendars with only the top prints. One of these, "A Surprise Party" was probably from 1920 and shows a World War One soldier coming home to a dog with puppies. These two were the works of artist A.D. Fuller. Another Fuller work, "Not This Trip, Old Pal," also from the World War One era is found in separate Pictorial Collection accession.
The other undated Hercules Powder Company calendar illustration, "Clearing the Field," shows a dynamite being blasted in a field and a hunting party with frightened dogs nearby. The artist is Gayle Hoskins.
The collection also includes reproductions of a group of three different display card advertisements for Laflin & Rand Powder Company, probably for point-of-sale or counter display. The first group represents shooting in the four seasons, and each features a boy with a shotgun and game birds he has shot. The second group also represent shooting in the four seasons, but each features an individual "Gibson Girl" style woman with a shotgun and gamebirds (snipe, woodcock, ducks, ruffed grouse) she has shot. The third group represents four American military men (a naval officer, 1st sergeant infantry, an artillery officer, 1st class gunners mate). The back sides of these cards were not copied.
