E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont company. The company was established in 1802 by Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) and his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834); the company began with the production of gunpowder. The du Pont’s purchased a mill site on the banks of the Brandywine River just North of Wilmington, Delaware. Throughout the 1900s and 1910s, the company shifted its focus away from gunpowder production and towards chemistry innovations.

Chalfonte-Haddon Hall was originally occupied by two three-story wooden Quaker rooming houses, The Chalfonte House and The Haddon House. The Chalfonte House was built in 1868, and the Haddon House was opened across the street in 1869. The Haddon House was sold to Leeds & Lippincott in 1890, and in 1896 they rebuilt it, naming the new, larger hotel "Haddon Hall." Henry Leeds then bought The Chalfonte House in 1900 and constructed a modern hotel on the site, renaming it the Chalfonte Hotel. It opened in 1904.

The current Haddon Hall building was constructed in stages in the 1920s. Soon after the modern Haddon Hall was completed, it was merged with the adjacent Chalfonte via a skyway. At the time of its completion, the new Chalfonte-Haddon Hall complex consisted of 1,000 rooms and was the city's largest hotel by capacity.

During World War II, Chalfonte-Haddon Hall was requisitioned by the U.S. Military and converted to the Atlantic City Air Forces Training & Reception Center Hospital, and it was renamed Thomas England General Hospital. At the grand re-opening in 1946, Chalfonte-Haddon Hall was opened as a convention site. Chalfonte-Haddon Hall is currently the site of Resorts International Casino. The Haddon Hall building was renovated for the opening, but the Chalfonte could not be and was razed in 1980.
