Biographical Note
Luther D. Reed (b. 1885) began at DuPont in 1903 at Repauno, becoming assistant to the superintendent in 1914. He ultimately became the director of rayon and later the Trade Analysis Division in 1937, retiring in 1950. After his retirement, he became the director of the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation.

Interviewers: Norman B. Wilkinson, John Scafidi, Faith Pizor, Joseph P. Monigle, and Walter J. Heacock in Wilmington, Delaware
Reed describes his early working career with DuPont in the dynamite plant in Gibbstown, his movement to the Hopewell, Virginia plant, the beginnings of DuPont's values regarding safety, and the introduction of on-site medical care. He also discusses the typical plant working environment and the challenges he faced at the Hopewell plant.
