Biographical Note
William F. Flanigan (b. 1890) grew up in Walker's Banks and Squirrel Run, the son of a keg worker and the grandson of a powder mill worker killed in an explosion in 1872. He began working for DuPont in 1908, driving teams of horses through the powder yards. After serving in World War I, he returned to the company in 1920.

Interviewers: Norman B. Wilkinson and Joseph P. Monigle in Wilmington, Delaware
Flanigan describes the houses in which he grew up, relationships among his neighbors, his education, a feeling of isolation in the community, and childrens' chores and pastimes. He also describes his first job at the Hodgson Woolen Mill, various ethnicities that worked at DuPont, different explosions that occurred, and daily life during his childhood and teenage years.
