Biographical Note
Ethel Lippman (1891-1987) and David Sarnoff (1891-1971) were friends in their youth.
Ethel Brager was born October 12, 1891 in Germany to William Brager (1866-1920) and Matilda "Tillie" Nathanson Brager (circa 1869-1946). The family immigrated to New York in 1892. Her parents supposedly objected to her marrying Sarnoff because they viewed him as just a wireless clerk with no prospects. Instead, she married Martin Lippman, a New York lawyer. Lippman's and Sarnoff's sons attended Andover together. She corresponded with Sarnoff until his final illness. Lippman died September 17, 1987.
David Sarnoff was the iconic leader of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) for most of the company's history. For many years the only Jewish executive in the communications field, Sarnoff
was highly influential in the development of radio and television.
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a few copies of Ethel Lippman's (1891-1987) handwritten letters and all of David Sarnoff's (1891-1971) replies. They are mostly of a personal nature, including recommending the Lippmans' son for admission to Andover, acknowledging Sarnoff's various achievements, public appearances and anniversaries, and mutual letters of sympathy and condolence. Sarnoff's replies are usually curt acknowledgements typed on official RCA letterhead. There are also two issues of the Marconi Service News from 1917 with notices of the young Sarnoff, then a rising Marconi employee.
