This collection consists of photographic prints made from original negatives taken primarily by Edward J. S. Seal (1896-1955) of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, during the first half of the twentieth century. These photographs provide a glimpse into family and farm life in Chadds Ford during the 1920s through the 1940s. The majority of the pictures are views of and around Chadds Ford and Wilmington, Delaware. Many of the views are of the Seal's farm, Locust Knoll Farm, including the farmhouse, farm activities, animals, and equipment. Pictures also show numerous family members, friends, neighbors, and employees. The artists, N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, appear in four photographs. Activities pictured include family gatherings and holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, Sunday School picnics, and fox hunting parties. Many vehicles are pictured, including automobiles, motorcycles, Conestoga wagons, haywagons, and other farm equipment. There are also photographs of local buildings and sites such as shops, mills, houses, barns, gas stations, railroad stations, farms, post offices, greenhouses, churches, and cemeteries. Photographs also show local bridges and roads, including the bridge on Route 1 under construction, the widening of Kennett Pike, and views along Smith Bridge Road. Other photographs include Washington's Headquarters in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, and a few photographs taken at the New York World's Fair (1939) show exhibition buildings.
