Pendulum clocks were invented by Christiaan Huygens in 1656 and are known for their accurate timekeeping abilities through the use of the pendulum, or swinging weight. Pendulum clocks were ubiquitous throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and were crafted in a variety of styles. Schoolhouse style regulator clocks were common in a domestic setting either as mantle clocks or wall mounts. Their heads are typically circular or hexagonal in shape with a narrower body showcasing the pendulum. Ogee clocks were likewise commonplace in the domestic setting during the 19th century as wall or mantle clocks, and incorporated the aesthetic of ogee architectural moulding. Rectangular in shape, the ogee moulding frames a central glass door, upon which it was common to contain a decorative panel.
