Hendrick had recently sold his oil refining business (also called the Hendrick Manufacturing Company) in Franklin, Pennsylvania and at his Carbondale plant, began to manufacture perforated sheet metal for use as press screens in the oil and coal industries. Over time, the firm developed a number of other punched or perforated metal products, including grated metal walkways for sewers and ships.
