Items with a specific and limited use, created with the intention of being discarded after serving their purpose, are called ephemera. This collection consists of mixed-format ephemera from various endeavors within American culture, primarily the manufacturing and selling of products or services.

Historical Note

Items with a specific and limited use, created with the intention of being discarded after serving their purpose, are called ephemera. These seemingly unimportant and commonplace materials can often provide valuable insight into the culture of the time period. Additionally, ephemera can be used for the study of graphic design, typography, and various printing processes.

Organized by the following subjects: agriculture, beverage, cloth/clothing, cosmetic, financial, food, household, medical, religion, sewing, soap, tobacco, transportation, utility product, war, and miscellaneous.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of mixed-format ephemera from various endeavors within American culture, primarily the manufacturing and selling of products or services. Advertising cards and labels compose a large portion of the collection, but also included are billheads, blotters, bookmarks, business cards, catalogs, checks, envelopes, flyers, letterheads, newsletters, packaging, postcards, and stamps.
