Historical Note
Mauch Chunk, a town in northeastern Pennsylvania now known as Jim Thorpe, was founded in 1818 by Josiah White (1781-1850). It grew up around the coal industry. Mauch Chunk was the northern terminus of the Lehigh Canal which went to Easton, Pennsylvania and the Delaware River. Coal was transported down the canal and then on the river to Philadelphia and other industrial centers. In the 1850s, the Lehigh Valley Railroad replaced the canal since it delivered coal to Easton more quickly. In the twentieth century the coal industry went into decline and Mauch Chunk along with it. In 1954, Mauch Chunk changed its name to Jim Thorpe after the decorated and beloved athlete in order to attract business and tourism.
