Abstract

The Merchants Coal Company mined semi-bituminous coal in the early twentieth century. These are images of early construction at the Merchants Coal Company in Boswell, Pennsylvania.

Historical Note

The Merchants Coal Company mined semi-bituminous coal in the early twentieth century. The town of Boswell, Pennsylvania was developed surrounding coal mines, named such after Thomas Boswell (1861-1929), the first president and supervisor of the company. Boswell purchased farms consisting of 14,000 acres and then laid out 1,600 lots on which coal company houses were built, and developed a 1,100 foot slope entry mine in 1901.

These are images of early construction at the Merchants Coal Company in Boswell, Pennsylvania, showing the following views: a steel bridge over Quemahoning Creek, tipple, company housing, brick plant, mouth of mine, power house, and a temporary company store.
