The railroad in Pennsylvania expanded greatly throughout late nineteenth century. This item is a photographic print showing posed group of twelve laborers photographed by industrial building near railroad track.

Historical Note

The railroad in Pennsylvania expanded greatly throughout late nineteenth century. Many Irish and Italian immigrants were hired as laborers as well as native born Americans. Railroad laborers were often not treated well by management and there is a long history of labor disputes and strikes.

Scope and Content

One photographic print showing posed group of twelve laborers photographed by industrial building near railroad track. Almost half hold shovels and pick axes. Two of the men may be foremen. Identity and location are unknown (possibly Pennsylvania), however, the image gives a representation of laborers' clothing from the late nineteenth century.
