Historical Note

Henry Belin du Pont (1873-1902) was a descendant of Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours (1739-1817) who founded the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company with his son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) in 1802. The E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company is a chemical company more commonly referred to as the DuPont Company. Henry Belin du Pont was the son of Mary Belin (1839–1913) and Lammot du Pont (1831-1884). He spent his time after graduating from school on the banks of the Brandywine, and while there took some of the loveliest pictures that exist of the Brandywine valley in the nineteenth century. He lived in Louviers, across the creek from the powder yards, and often walked about them taking pictures, sometimes accompanied by his wife, Eleuthera Bradford du Pont (1873-1953). Usually the powder yards served as a background for a portrait of his wife or his friends, but the quality of the pictures and the care of their composition bespeaks more than a casual involvement in their taking. Henry developed tuberculosis at an early age, however, and had to leave Delaware for his health, dying in Arizona in 1902. Henry and Eleuthera had two sons: Henry Belin du Pont, Jr. (1898-1970) and Edward Bradford du Pont (1899-1900).

One other view is of an 8" B.L. rifle at Springfield, Pennsylvania.
