Theophilus P. Chandler (1845-1928) was an architect, artist and professor. He designed churches, houses and bridges, trainstations and other structures, such as the bear pits at the Philadelphia Zoo. He married Sophie M. du Pont (1851-1931), daughter of Henry du Pont (1812-1889) and Louisa Gerhard (1816-1900), in March 1873. The collection consists of 4 wash drawings of various scenes at Eleutherian Mills, then the residence of Henry du Pont (1812-1889).

Biographical Note
Theophilus P. Chandler (1845-1928) was an architect, artist and professor. He designed churches, houses and bridges, trainstations and other structures, such as the bear pits at the Philadelphia Zoo. Chandler founded the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania (circa 1890). Originally from Massachusetts, Chandler moved to Philadelphia in 1872 to work with landscape architect Robert Copeland on the development of Ridley Park. The Chandlers and the du Pont families were long-time friends and Chandler was a financial backer of the DuPont Company.
Chandler married Sophie M. du Pont (1851-1931), daughter of Henry du Pont (1812-1889) and Louisa Gerhard (1816-1900), in March 1873.
Scope and Content
Scenes at Eleutherian Mills, then the residence of Henry du Pont (1812-1889). Drawings show a general view of the Eleutherian Mills barn; the stable area of the barn; the first office with ice house and swing; and the Eleutherian Mills garden with pump and woman strolling on path. Two of the scenes are signed "TPC" and dated "October 1873."
