Abstract

Cazenove Gardner Lee, Jr. (1882-1945) was a genealogist and prolific writer, who founded the Society of Lees of Virginia. This collection conists of photographs and negatives relating to family and career of Cazenove Gardner Lee, Jr. The images are primarily of various gunpowder mills and machinery.

General Physical Description

1 album (59 photographs) ; 18 x 28 cm. 72 photographic prints ; 3.5 x 5.5 in. or smaller. 193 negatives ; 3.5 x 5.75 in. or smaller. Many of the photographic prints are loose within the album.

Biographical Note

Cazenove Gardner Lee, Jr. (1882-1945) was a genealogist and prolific writer, who founded the Society of Lees of Virginia. He was the son of Cazenove Gardner Lee (1850-1912) and Marguerite Lammot du Pont (1862-1936), the daughter of Eleuthère Irénée duPont (1829-1877) and Charlotte S. Henderson (1835-1877).

Lee, Jr. married Dorothy Vandegrift Lee (1886-1972), who was active in conservation and civic associations. Mrs. Lee was one of the first directors of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation (now Association) which raised funds to restore Stratford Hall, the Lee birthplace in Virginia.

Arrangement

The collection has been organized into three series: I. Photograph album; II. Negative album; III. Unidentified negatives.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of photographs and negatives relating to family and career of Cazenove Gardner Lee, Jr. The images are primarily of various gunpowder mills, including Mooar, Iowa; Schaghticoke, New York; Ashburn, Missouri; and the Brandywine Mills area. There are images of workers, machinery and views of aftermaths of explosions and fires. There are also images of family and friends around Wilmington area, at the beach, playing tennis, sailing and canoeing.

Series I. Photograph album includes photographic prints with no captions or identification. A third of the photographs are adhered to pages within the album. The remaining photographs were originally loose within the album; these photographs have been removed and foldered separately for preservation; however; the original order of the photographs has been retained.

Series II. Negatives album contains negatives which were originally within the album, few of which have corresponding photographs within the photograph album. The negatives have been removed from the negative album for preservation. The original order of the negatives has been retained. Description from the index in the negative album was used to identify the images.

Series III. Unidentified negatives consists of negatives which were loose and not associated with the photograph album or the negative album.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for research.

Negatives are stored offsite in cold storage (Box 2). At least 24 hours notice required to allow retrieval of these items.
