Edward B. du Pont Jr. was the son of Margaret Lewis du Pont (1900-1985) and Henry B. du Pont (1898-1970). He was named after his father's brother, Edward Bradford DuPont (1899-1900). He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1956 and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1959.

He worked for the family business, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., for eight years prior to joining the Wilmington Trust Company in 1968. He began in the Trust Department and retired in 1985 as vice president.

He served on the boards of directors and boards of trustees for the University of Delaware; Pomfret School; Mystic Seaport; Hagley Museum & Library; Welfare Foundation, Inc.; and Atlantic Aviation Corporation. He was a trustee and vice president of Longwood Foundation, Inc., and served on the board of managers for the Wilmington Public Library.

Three years after Ruth du Pont's death, he remarried. Elissa Stevens du Pont (1935-) and Edward B. du Pont were married for fourteen years before his death in 2017.

Scope and Contents

This small collection documents Edward B. du Pont's service on the boards of directors for the DuPont Company, Atlantic Aviation, and the Hagley Museum and Library, as well as the board of trustees for the University of Delaware, primarily through group portraits. His work for the DuPont Company is most heavily represented. The collection is arranged chronologically.

The DuPont Company photographs include four albums; two chronicle the merger between the DuPont Company and Conoco in 1981. The first album shows an event celebrating the DuPont Company's acquiring majority ownership in Conoco. Other companies were vying to take ownership, and DuPont won the bidding. The second album shows the official signing of the merger between the DuPont Company and Conoco on September 30, 1981.

A similar album shows the October 17, 1977, signing of the official merger papers between the DuPont Company and the du Pont family's Christiana Securities Co., a Wilmington holding company that owns newspapers.

In 1984, the DuPont Company's board meeting was held in London; Luxembourg and Aberdeen, Scotland, were also visited as part of the official meeting. A small album contains images of Edward and Ruth du Pont's business trip.

The remaining images are group portraits of boards of directors that Edward du Pont served on or committees within those boards; there is one portrait of du Pont, as well as a set of images of du Pont as a young child with his parents and two siblings on a train platform in the 1940s. The majority of the images date from 1977 to 2003.
