Abstract

Eleuthère Paul du Pont (1887-1950) was the founder of the luxury automobile company DuPont Motors, Incorporated in 1919. In 1930, E. Paul du Pont also became the president of the Indian Motorcycle Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. Throughout his life, E. Paul du Pont developed numerous patents and wrote articles for various trade publications in the automobile industry. DuPont Motors, Incorporated was a manufacturing company of luxury automobiles, founded by E. Paul du Pont in 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. Indian Motorcycle Company is a manufacturer of a wide variety of motorcycles. In 1930, after selling DuPont Motors, Incorporated stock, E. Paul du Pont bought a large share of Indian Motorcycle Company stock and became the company president. This collection documents both the professional and personal history of Eleuthère Paul du Pont and his family. The material spans from the end of the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. The collection is predominantly textual material and photographic prints having to do with both DuPont Motors, Incorporated and Indian Motorcycle Company administrative and financial correspondence and advertising and publications. Besides business material, the collection includes personal letters between E. Paul du Pont and his siblings and children, and family snapshots and portraits usually taken at their home in Delaware.

Biographical Note

Eleuthère Paul du Pont (1887-1950) was the son of Francis Gurney du Pont (1850-1904) and Eliza Wigfall Simons du Pont (1849-1919) and founder of the luxury automobile company, DuPont Motors, Incorporated in 1919. E. Paul du Pont attended the Episcopal Academy in Virginia for high school and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909. He married Jean Kane Foulke (1891-1985) in 1910. Before he began DuPont Motors, Incorporated, du Pont worked for his family’s chemical production company, the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. E. Paul du Pont later became the chief engineer of Ball Grain Explosives Company, a fuse manufacturer. In 1930, E. Paul du Pont also became the president of the Indian Motorcycle Company in Springfield, Massachusetts. Throughout his life, E. Paul du Pont developed numerous patents and wrote articles for various trade publications in the automobile industry.

Historical Note

DuPont Motors, Incorporated was a manufacturing company of luxury automobiles, founded by E. Paul du Pont in 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. The company initially produced marine engines during World War I. DuPont Motors, Inc. produced eight models, each with several body styles and a few special models. Each of the vehicles was made in limited production, resulting in only 537 vehicles manufactured in the twelve years of the company’s operation. The company suspended production in 1931 due to the effects of the Great Depression and went out of business in 1932. These luxury automobiles were sold to famous celebrities during the company’s manufacturing run and were featured in car shows in New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

Historical Note

Indian Motorcycle Company is a manufacturer of a wide variety of motorcycles, was originally called the Hendee Manufacturing Company, founded by George M. Hendee (1866-1943), a former bicycle rider, in 1897. The company first produced bicycles. In 1923, the company name was changed to Indian Motorcycle Company.

The company continued manufacturing throughout the Great Depression and the two world wars. During World War II, production at Indian Motorcycle was devoted to providing motorcycles for military use to the Allied powers. Indian Motorcycle Company vehicles were ridden in races throughout the twentieth century, including those at Daytona Beach in Florida.

In 1930, after selling DuPont Motors, Incorporated stock, E. Paul du Pont bought a large share of Indian Motorcycle Company stock and became the company president. The company has produced motorcycle models, including the Indian Scout, Indian Chief, and Indian Ace. The Indian Motorcycle Company continues to produce motorcycles and related equipment today.

Scope and Content

This collection documents both the professional and personal history of Eleuthère Paul du Pont and his family. The material spans from the end of the nineteenth century through the twentieth century. The collection is predominantly textual material and photographic prints having to do with both DuPont Motors, Incorporated and Indian Motorcycle Company administrative and financial correspondence and advertising and publications. There are some black and white negatives and slide transparencies, as well as two interviews on video discs (DVD). Besides business material, the collection includes personal letters between E. Paul du Pont and his siblings and children, and family snapshots and portraits usually taken at their home in Delaware.

The collection is arranged into three series: DuPont Motors, Incorporated series, Indian Motorcycle Company series, and du Pont family history and other personal records series.

The DuPont Motors, Incorporated series is divided into two subseries: Publications, advertisements, and company images; and Administrative files.

The publications, advertisements, and company images subseries includes photographic prints of the various DuPont automobile models, automobile industry trade publications, and advertisements for the company provided through either DuPont Motors, Inc. or a local newspaper or magazine.

The administrative files subseries includes correspondence between E. Paul du Pont and his employees, the heads of other companies in the industry, and with law offices discussing the establishment of patents. The subseries also provides information regarding stockholders' events and the other du Pont businesses, including DuPont Motors Securities Company.

The Indian Motorcycle Company series is divided into two subseries: Publications, advertisements, and company images; and Administrative files.

The publications, advertisements, and company images subseries includes photographic prints of E. Paul du Pont with Indian Motorcycle products and snapshots of racers riding Indian Motorcycle vehicles. The subseries also includes motorcycle trade publications having to do directly with Indian Motorcycle Company or motorcycle innovation in general, and two video discs interviewing both Indian Motorcycle vehicle owners and Stephen du Pont.

The administrative files subseries includes extensive correspondence between E. Paul du Pont and his son Stephen du Pont (1915-2012) who became invested in the Indian Motorcycle Company. There are also several canceled checks paid to the order of Indian Motorcycle Company and progress reports addressed to the company during World War II regarding Indian Motorcycle's production rates. This subseries provides some information regarding the purchase of company stock between DuPont Motors, Inc. and Indian Motorcycle Company.

The du Pont family history and other personal records series encompass the textual and graphic materials having to do with the affairs of E. Paul du Pont, his wife, his children, and even his parents. The series includes various portraits and snapshots of E. Paul du Pont from childhood to adulthood, portraits of Francis Gurney du Pont and Eliza Wigfall Simons, personal letters between Jean Kane Foulke and her children after her husband's death, and images of the du Pont family property along the Brandywine River. There are also two handwritten journals that had belonged to E. Paul du Pont and some written pieces having to do with his upbringing.
