Biographical / Historical

Campbell Soup Company is a processed food manufacturing corporation based in the United States. The company was founded by Joseph A. Campbell (1817-1900) and Abraham Anderson (1829-1915) in 1869 and specialized in canned vegetables, soups, and other non-perishable items. In 1897, John Thompson "J.T." Dorrance (1873-1930), a chemist working for Campbell Soup Company, developed a system for creating stronger-tasting, more nutritious canned soups. Dorrance halved the amount of water in each can and increased the stock strength. The result was a more flavorful condensed soup, and its popularity among consumers propelled Campbell Soup Company to one of the largest food corporations in the world. During the twentieth century, Campbell Soup Company began to diversify and expand its investment in advertising. Under the leadership of CEO William Beverly Murphy (1907-1994), the company acquired Pepperidge Farm Inc., Godiva Chocolatier, V8 Vegetable Juice, and other food-based businesses.
